Skype and K7
I see myself as someone who stays up to date on modern technology, but when it comes to modern trends I am a bit sluggish. I have to admit that when Facebook first showed up for college students only, I thought it was dumb. It was a place for people to spy on others (still is), but it has really turned out to be a powerful force in today's culture. In my current issues class, we discussed how the political contestants, in Palestine, have their own Facebook page and use it to relay their message as well as coordinate protests against their oppressive "democracy." I use the term democracy lightly. I will take credit for projecting Facebook taking over the world, because it has definitely achieved that on a cultural level. However, this entry is not about Facebook. Everyone by now knows what Facebook is. I am going to talk about a few things I just recently discovered firsthand, although I have known about them for awhile.

Skype is a communication website. They allow you to use the internet and your computer to make phone calls to cellular phones (for a small fee per minute) or to other Skype computers (for free). I can't say I have delved into this service much, but I did call myself for free to test it out. I have to say, it was cool.

The reason I even looked into Skype was due to my long distance relationship with my girlfriend. We happen to go to different colleges that are 500 miles apart. It sucks, but we make it work. A while back I bought us a pair of web-cams, so we could occasionally have video conversations instead of the old voice chats. We used AIM for these video chats, but I knew there were better services that specialized in video, instead of just instant messaging. I knew Skype was such a service. This brought me to last night when I was on AIM and video chatting. AIM crashed mid conversation, so I looked further into Skype. I downloaded it, and the interface already got my attention. This service has such a hip, professional feel to it. That modern feel that I love. I look forward to using this program some more.

K7 is less of a mainstream service. This service gives you a phone number that you can use. However, the number is only used as either a fax or a voice mail. If anyone calls these numbers, their message will be emailed to you with audio files, so you can check them on your computer. I am going to mainly use my number as a fax, and as a number when completing Points2Shop offers. I was pretty impressed with this as well. Kinda amazed at what there is out there on the internet. Oh, and this is entirely free to use, so might as well try it.
